Test Automation β€’ Lesson 5

Automation Fundamentals & Strategy

Learn when to automate, select the right framework, write maintainable test scripts, and integrate tests into a CI/CD pipeline.

⏱ 45 minutes ● Intermediate πŸ§ͺ Automation lab included

01 β€’ Strategy

When to Automate (and When Not To)

Automation is an investment. High-value candidates include repetitive regression suites, data-driven tests, and API endpoints. Manual testing remains essential for exploratory testing, UX evaluation, and rapidly changing features.

Rule of Thumb

Automate tests that are run frequently, have predictable outcomes, and consume significant manual regression time.

02 β€’ Architecture

The Test Automation Pyramid

A healthy test suite relies on a strong foundation of fast Unit Tests, supported by Integration/API tests, with a lean layer of End-to-End (E2E) UI tests at the top.

Unit Tests (Base)

Fastest, cheapest, and most isolated. Covers individual functions and components.

API / Service Tests

Fast and reliable. Validates business logic, integrations, and data contracts.

UI / E2E Tests (Top)

Slower and more fragile. Focuses strictly on critical user journeys.

03 β€’ Tools

Selecting the Right Framework

Choose tools based on application architecture, team skill set, and execution speed requirements.

04 β€’ Code Quality

Maintainable Automation Practices

Flaky tests destroy trust in automation. Build resilient suites using robust design patterns and dynamic waiting strategies.

  • Page Object Model (POM): Decouple test logic from UI selectors for easier maintenance.
  • Avoid Fixed Sleep: Use dynamic explicit waits for element visibility instead of static timeouts.
  • Independent Tests: Ensure every test sets up its own state and cleans up afterward.

05 β€’ Practice Lab

Draft an Automation Plan

Identify 3 critical user journeys from your application, classify where they fit on the testing pyramid, and outline the target framework and locator strategy.

06 β€’ Knowledge Check

Check your understanding

1. Which layer of the testing pyramid should contain the largest volume of tests?
2. What is the primary benefit of the Page Object Model (POM)?
3. How should test scripts handle asynchronous UI elements?
